THE BODY-MIND CONNECTION
|
I'm a Gestalt therapist with a private practice in New York City, and a Certified Iyengar Yoga Instructor. Living in Manhattan is high-stress and demanding. Whether it's parenting obligations, mortgages, time-consuming jobs, or coping with a divorce, it is easy to become detached from your wants and needs. Integrating the body-mind connection into therapy helps my clients get back in touch with their feelings.
What's happening in your body as you search for a new therapist? Does your stomach feel nervous? Do you have a headache? Is your breathing shallow? It's okay if you have no idea. In therapy, attention to physical sensations and breath helps us figure out what's going on for you emotionally. |

My Gestalt Approach to Therapy
|
Our work together is designed to help you increase awareness of the emotional patterns in your daily life. During your session, I ask you to focus on what's happening in the moment in your body and mind. Gestalt therapy calls this bringing the 'here and now' into the session.
I view therapy as a partnership. I'm not here to tell you what's right or wrong for you. My goal is to understand things from your point of view without any judgment. We're working together to figure out what you need in your life. The more self-aware you become the easier it is to identify what makes you happy and what doesn't. As you grow in self-acceptance new ways of living your life become possible. |

Gestalt Therapy and Yoga
ANNA'S JOURNEY TO BECOME A THERAPIST
Yoga is a mirror |
After college, when I didn't know what I wanted to do with my life, I went into treatment with a Gestalt therapist, and it changed everything. She was honest about her struggles, never acting like she couldn't relate to my experience. Her vulnerability inspired and encouraged me.
This type of therapy helped me build confidence and grow in self-esteem. It also helped me discover I wanted to become a Gestalt therapist myself. While getting my social work degree, I started studying Iyengar yoga. In 2011, I enrolled in teacher training at the NY Iyengar Institute, eventually becoming a Certified Teacher. Both disciplines focus on connecting the mind and body with the present moment. It was a perfect fit. Once I completed my graduate training, I brought Iyengar yoga philosophy into my therapy work with clients. We're not doing sun salutations during your session! But Iyengar informs my approach to treatment as we work together to help you process and move through feelings. I love my work. It's an honor when clients decide to share their private stories with me. I feel lucky and grateful to participate in these intimate discussions. |
